Other new mixes come from Men-D and Toshi Furuya

There's an interesting backstory to this release. It first came out as a vinyl-only release in 2004 and at the time I was so impressed with it that I made it my ‘iDJ Tune Of The Month’ when the magazine was still in print. Now, 12 years on, it returns with a whole host of mixes and radio edits by Men-D, Toshi Furuya... and this one, by Spanish producer Akku, which is rather tasty.

It starts with a menacing kickdrum and acidic bassline, then develops with risers and snare rolls into a pounding yet uplifting trancer with loads of sound effects and clever production which take you to a music box breakdown that sounds sublime, and leads you nicely on to the operatic vocals which are one of the main hooks for the track. There's also a female spoken line repeating "tears of an angel", woven neatly into that pounding backbeat, that has 'hands-in-the-air tune" written all over it.

The other mixes are also in a trance vein and are well worth a listen, but I was immediately drawn to this one as it has the perfect balance of toughness which is sweetened by the female aria-style vocals and the music box breakdown. We don’t do a 'tune of the month' any more, but if we did I would have no hesitation in recommending this track to all lovers of trance, and indeed good music in general, as it's an absolute belter!
