Three CDs contain tracks from Masters At Work, Jungle Brothers, Playgroup, Bizarre Inc and many more
Defected's House Masters series reaches its 26th installment in just eight years, with the release of this three-CD boxset focusing on the work of NYC veteran Todd Terry.
You know the deal by now: three CDs, packed with both the best of Terry's own productions and the cream of his remixes for other people. The latter make up the lion's share of CD1, which opens with Terry's landmark remix of Everything But The Girl's Missing, before moving on through tracks from Jungle Brothers, Playgroup, Bizarre Inc and more. CD2, meanwhile, showcases more underground club mixes for the likes of Masters At Work and Royal House, as well as classic early tracks from Terry himself in his Black Riot, House Of Gypsies and Gypsymen guises.
Finally, CD3 is comprised mostly of (slightly) more recent material under his own name, such as a 2005 cover of the Reese & Santonio classic Rock 2 The Beat that I must admit I hadn't come across before. Such is, indeed, the album's greatest strength: by balancing out big hits like Keep On Jumpin' and Something Going On with more obscure nuggets, it's unlikely any one buyer would already have everything that's featured here, a perennial problem with 'best of' collections.
A very respectable tribute to a producer who truly is one of "New York's finest".
