It's the debut release from new not-for-profit label Needs
Here we have the first-ever release from brand new label Needs, a not-for-profit venture that aims, in their words, "to use music as a medium to spread love, unity and the idea of giving back - promoting harmony and togetherness rather than isolation and estrangement". Each release will raise money for a different cause, with all proceeds from this one going to mental health charity Mind.
So far, so worthy - the really good news is that they've actually signed some damn fine music to aid them in their charitable endeavours! The EP kicks off with Hubie Davison's I Know, a dusty, jazzy deep house groove with a looping male "I know she's waiting" vocal, which is followed by Vigilia from Johannes Albert, a slice of blissed-out Balearica augmented by light-touch tribal drums, birdsong and a touch of acid. DJ Swagger then steps up with 21st Century Slow Jam, a simply gorgeous, unhurried deep house jam centred around lush piano chords and a warm, fat bassline, before label main man Bobby Pleasure plays us out with Cloudspotting, another deep n' dreamy houser with a blissed-out, 5am kinda feel.
21st Century Slow Jam is the killer to these ears, but there's not a duff cut in sight and it's raising money for a very good cause to boot. What's not to like?
