2 Bit Thugs

Jamie Howard and Charlie Holman come up with the goods once again

Messrs Jamie Howard and Charlie Holman, otherwise known as TwoSlice, return to Swerve Digital with a two-track EP.

The duo's last EP on Sidney Charles' Heavy House Society impressed this writer greatly, infusing deep tech/minimal sounds with an unaccustomed garage-y bump n' swing, and the two tracks here continue in a similar vein. Shakin' It Up foregrounds a sped-up female vocal sample (one that sounds suspiciously like a bite from The Blackbyrds' Rock Creek Park, but I woudn't bet on it), which it marries to twitchy, minimal-style percussion and a hefty hip-swaying bassline. Why Not, meanwhile, is an instrumental affair but otherwise similar in style, albeit with slightly more in-your-face drums.

In a sea of perfectly functional but at times same-y and overly clinical deep tech releases, this EP stands out head-and-shoulders thanks to its extra helpings of funk and groove. Recommended.
