There's life in the old vocal yet, says Danny Slade – especially with Mr Jey at the controls
Tough Love's latest signing to their Get Twisted label is house veteran Sharam Jey, who takes a well-known sample and constructs a fine disco-house track around it. Admittedly the sample's seen a fair bit of use over the years, but when it comes to making an effective dancefloor cut that's not necessarily a problem! Sharam Jey is no stranger to the art of production, and his take on it adds some nu-disco smarts.
There's no long-winded intro here: instead he lands you straight in the thick of the groove, with percussion and a super-funky bassline already in situ. As it develops he adds great authentic-sounding disco strings, a funky guitar lick and a repeated cut-up vocal shout that sits alongside the “come with me” component of the sample. Once the breakdown arrives, more cut-up lines of the sample are teased in before it's finally played in full, and as you'd expect from a Sharam Jey production it sounds magnificent. The track then is in full swing and so will be your dancefloor – this is a groovy number if ever I heard one.
There's only one mix included in the release, but then an instrumental or dub would have defeated the object somewhat! I'm sure this track will find its way onto many a DJ's USB stick over the coming months.
