The track is taken from the 'Beatz EP', which is out tomorrow

Today's exclusive track premiere comes to you courtesy of ASTIR Recordings, as iDJ brings you the first chance to hear Hair Like Fire by Cyprusian. The track is taken from the Beatz EP, which is out tomorrow (Friday 1 May).

Cyprusian hails from the city of Leeds, though as his choice of artist name implies, he has Mediterranean roots. Something of a multi-instrumentalist, he's adept on guitar, drums and bass, and has even been known to pick up a mic and sing. But it's in the DJ booth where he's most at home, having played everywhere from Distrikt in his home town, via Ministry Of Sound and Egg London, to Pacha and Itaca over in Ibiza.

As for ASTIR Recordings, we'd be remiss if we didn't offer full disclosure: there's something of a "family" connection here, because when label boss Simon Huxtable was first setting up the label he was kind enough to provide iDJ with a monthly diary column, documenting the pitfalls and triumphs involved in launching the label as they occurred. But that was several years ago now. Since then, ASTIR Recordings has successfully carved itself out a niche working at the progressive/melodic end of the house 'n' techno spectrum – and that's without any help from us whatsoever, and entirely due to the quality of the label's catalogue.

Take the Beatz EP for instance. The title track is a bass-y, surging prog cut, while the track we're airing right here is a slighty more tripped-out affair that, to our ears, sounds tailor-made for 4am floors.
