Pirate Copy serves up a devastating two-tracker on the long-running French label
Pirate Copy begins the new year in style with the release of this excellent two-track EP on Distance Music, one of the underground’s most reliable labels throughout 2018.
First up is the title track The After Party, which begins with a tight, snappy drum groove that's swiftly joined first by a funky bassline, and then by a vocal about how good the after parties are in LA, where they play house music into the early hours of the morning and where, the speaker implies, they also get very wasted, which I'm sure some people will be able to relate to! The second track is called Bounce To This and again has a funky bassline and snappy percussion at its core – indeed, they are the main hooks for the track, along with a stabbed lead which fits the almost tribal drum beats perfectly. There's a nice breakdown and build-up complete with snare roll, and the whole track just has you bouncing throughout, as the title suggests.
Pirate Copy has put a lot of thought into these grooves and his intelligent approach reaps rewards – this is is a damn fine release. My favourite track is the first one, but I will happily play both in the coming months.
