Stripped-down house grooves for the dancefloor
What we have here is the very first release from new Austrian label Still Awake. Still Awake is brought to you by the team behind the long-running club night of the same name, which has been going since 2011, and the label's debut sees co-founder Markus Kolz teaming up with German newcomer Mike Plate.
You'll certainly be able to identify Kolz's contribution Poggionero when you hear it, thanks to a distinctive spoken vocal which features a gentleman of Liverpudlian extraction - possibly one of the city's most famous musical quartet, but I wouldn't like to say - discussing the long relationship between music, drugs and alcohol, and how people "just wanna get a little high". On Kolz's original, the sample sits on top of a ponderous bassline, twitchy minimal percussion and wobbly, fluttering synths, but it's Mike Plate's remix, a pacier but still pretty deep house groove, that's floating my boat more.
Plate's own The Sound, a jaunty, stripped-down houser built with 3am floors in mind, completes a strong package and a strong label debut.
