Ewan Pearson supplies a brace of more leftfield remixes
LEON and Dennis Cruz join forces to create a stomper of a track for Crosstown Rebels. Handling remix duties is Ewan Pearson, who follows his own path and comes up trumps with two excellent versions.
First up is the Original Mix, which starts with a repeating bass note and a clap. Then the bassline is fattened out with more notes and more percussion is thrown into the mix, until a groovy midtempo backbeat is created. There's a little breakdown, and then the male vocals by BETA MAX are added which are spoken, not sung, and sound great, with effects on them to make them sound ever so slightly off-kilter. The production is tight and the track is very danceable in this format.
Then we have the Ewan Pearson Remix, which slows the BPMs right down to a low-tempo sleazy groove that has the vocal sitting right at the front of the mix, with subtle stereo panning in play. The backbeat has some great production trickery, so together they pack a formidable punch. Finally you get the Ewan Pearson Dub, with a guitar and 303 working in tandem to make a great track, with the odd vocal line thrown in as a true dub should have!
My favourite is the Ewan Pearson Remix, even though I won't be able to play it in a DJ set due to the low BPM. It just sounds good and chunky, which works for me!
