2 Bit Thugs

Her debut for Cassy's label features two tracks, and our Danny's loving both of 'em

Australian-born, Berlin-based DJ, producer and label owner Kristin Velvet brings a lustrous double-dose of headiness to Cassy’s Kwench Records imprint with this fine EP, which features two sumptuous tracks.

First up is High Ache, which begins with a kickdrum-backed, disco-infused filtered loop. Hi-hats and subtle changes are then added, before a mini-breakdown featuring a filtered string riff that really gets under your skin. The string riff then continues into the main body of the track, which is definitely one for the dancefloor with its simple but relentless kick leading the charge. There's also a second breakdown in this sophisticated disco tryst that begs to be played out.

The second track, No Worries, has the same air of sophistication about it, with another disco loop made up of funky guitars, brass instruments and strings, and a relentless bassline to lead you along. There are diva-esque vocals that appear later on in the track, and there are also various bleeps and idiosyncratic percussion sounds in play, with filtered sections adding to the majesty of this release.

I don’t have a favourite here: both cuts will get heavy rotation from yours truly (and no doubt many others) over the coming months, because this really is a gem of a release.
