The London-based producer signs two tracks to US label Desert Hearts
Here we have a fine EP from an artist whose personality is as big as his tunes. There are only two of the latter included on the release, but both are brimming with energy and soul and deserve to be heard good and loud.
First up is the incendiary Firepower, which starts with a large vocal "oh yeah" chant over a minimal, tribal backbeat that is excellently produced. Although made up of hardly any instrumentation, it still manages to sound huge when played out due to the clever use of effects which give it a great presence. At the start there's a relentless kick which is joined by other striking percussive elements and a simple but effective bassline, but these rhythmic parts of the track keep starting and stopping, as do the vocals, which are put through some serious FX processors.
Then you have Now You’re Talking, which is essentially more of the same. It begins with a relentless kick and mad vocals interspersed throughout the six-and-a-half minutes of the song, along with wild sounds and samples. It's minimal but really phat-sounding at the same time, which has to be commended.
I don’t have a favourite here as both tracks work so well. Like any good conjuring trick, if you analyse it you still can't see how it works - but it does, and that's all that matters.
