Chiptune nirvana is just an AAX/AU/VST plugin away...

New from Maryland, USA-based music software company Impact Soundworks comes Super Audio Boy, a new AAX-, AU-, and VST-compatible KONTAKT instrument/sample library that pays homage to the unique sound palette of the Nintendo Game Boy.

Super Audio Boy takes sounds from Impact Soundworks' existing 8-bit sound library, Super Audio Cart (a paid-for package offering sounds from several different gaming consoles and handhelds), and adds synthesis, rhythm, effects and modulation. Super Audio Boy comes complete with the same four independent sound sources as its bigger brother, together with an integrated sound source browser, over a dozen filter models, poly- arpeggiator, sequencer, 64-slot modulation matrix and five FX racks.

Lead developer Andrew Aversa said: "Everything is sampled from an actual Game Boy; these are the waveforms with all the grit from the circuitry of the Game Boy, recorded and very carefully edited and looped. The wonderful thing about this free instrument is that you can take those very simple waveforms, put them into the engine, and do all sorts of cool stuff - not just Game Boy sounds, but create modern sounds as well.

"The big difference between Super Audio Boy and other free Game Boy emulations out there," continues Aversa, "is that you have all these additional sound design features. For example, we also have an X-Y pad, which can be assigned to Layer Blend so we can blend between layers, and then the X and Y axes can be assigned in our modulation matrix."

And best of all, it's free! For more information, and to grab your copy, head over to Impact Soundworks' own website. Note that to use Super Audio Boy you'll need the full version of Kontakt (5.5.2 or above).
