Sample and loop specialists Sample Magic recently opened a new studio in Los Angeles called The Laboratory, and to celebrate they're giving away two packs of free drum sounds sampled from Roland's famous TR-808 and TR-909 drum machines.

To get hold of the samples, you'll need to register as a user of Sample Magic's website. But once you've done that, the two packs are yours to download for the princely sum of absolutely nothing... which is a damn sight cheaper than buying the recently launched TR-08 and TR-09 boutique hardware versions of these classic machines at upwards of £320 a pop!

The 909 pack weighs in at 7.8MB (zipped) and consists of some 78 24-bit/44.1kHz WAV samples, each recorded through a Prism Orpheus soundcard and a Neve 1073 preamp. These consist of 16 kickdrum sounds, 23 toms, 14 snares, rimshot, clap, five rides, 12 crashes and six hi-hats (three open, three closed). The 808 pack, meanwhile, features 107 samples totalling 3.5MB (zipped), comprising 57 kicks, 15 snares, eight toms, 12 congas and 11 hi-hats (five open, six closed), plus clap, clave, cowbell, rimshot and shaker.

The packs are only going to be available for a limited time, though, so if you want them, get yourself over to soonest!
