Swiss scene fave Florian Boo serves up a fine four-tracker on Rotterdam-based Celsius

Much as I love liquid funk, it has to be said that a lot of it can get a bit wishy-washy at times… bland and overly polite. This four-track EP from Swiss liquid stalwart Flowrian, though, is none of those things – it's got all the soulful/jazzy feel you expect of the style, but underpinned by some proper grit.

Melissa gets the ball rolling, an ultra-funky affair underpinned by a hefty bassline and light-touch breakbeats, and topped with disembodied vocal wails. Next comes May, a darker cut that leans a little more towards the minimal style and would be my personal pick of the four. Then we come to Southern Taurids itself, in many ways the most archetypally "liquid" number on the EP but with plenty of bottom-end wallop, and rave-y chipmunk'd vocal snips instead of the ethereal warbling found on much similarly-styled material. And then finally there's On The Road Again, a deep, mellow liquid roller that serves as the perfect end-of-EP comedown tune.

With four varied but complementary cuts, this is pretty much as good as liquid gets as of 2021, and fans of the style are recommended to check for this one immediately.
