Morales denies attempting to smuggle the drug and says it may have been planted
NYC house legend David Morales was detained in Fukuoka, Japan after a tiny amount of MDMA was found in his carry-on luggage by customs officials.
Morales was entering Japan on Saturday afternoon, having just flown in from Hong Kong, when the drug was discovered. He was suppose to be playing at the Bijou club in the city that night, but that gig had to be called off. He denied any knowledge of how the drug came to be there, saying that someone else must have put it there without his knowing.
The quanity of the drug involved is tiny - just 0.3g - but Japan has strict anti-drug laws, and possession of even the tiniest amount of MDMA is punishable by up to seven years in jail, as well as a fine of up to ¥3M ($26,500/£20,000 approx).
The news was broken by Japanese national newspaper Asahi Shimbun and has since been taken up by everyone from Sky News to The Sun, but no statement from Morales's own representatives has yet been forthcoming.
