Denmark's Christian Nielsen serves up a three-track EP for Jesse Rose's label
Danish DJ/ producer Christian Nielsen has come up trumps with this three-track EP, which has already garnered support from the likes of Pete Tong on his BBC Radio 1 show.
The first track, We Go On, plays homage to the analogue synthesizer, with the main riff being a giant slab of synth, interspersed with soulful vocals that weave in and out between the sometimes arpeggiated but ever-present synth riffs, and the result is pretty tasty. The second track, Last Night, is a housier affair with a frenetic one-bar piano riff and funky bassline underpinning it. There are some crazy vocal pads, syncopated percussion and one-note string lines which help the track along nicely, and it has a Latin feel to it which works fine for me. This track is definitely the most coherent for me and therefore is my favourite.
Finally you have Bringing Back The Funk, which starts with a snare and hi-hat and builds with a booming kickdrum, repetitive vocal stabs and much craziness which work to a tee. The one thing it does lack - oddly, given the title - is a funky bassline, which is its only downside; otherwise it's a conga-fuelled, madly percussive aural gem and finishes the EP off perfectly.
