2 Bit Thugs

Las Vegas-based brothers Kariem and Kashim come to the Spearhead sub-label

What we have here are two deep liquid D&B cuts from Las Vegas-based brotherly duo Blacklab, whose work has previously appeared on Delta9, Soulvent, Viper Recordings and many other labels.

Curious gets the ball rolling, opening with a 45-second beatless intro of chime-like sounds, rising pads, piano chords and ethereal vocal fragments before bursting out a lightly rolling breakbeat and a truly cavernous three-note bassline. The vocals return in full effect once the track gets going, but really it's that heavy, rumbling bass that propels the track along, making for a cut that's chilled enough for sofa-bound listening yet still has enough energy for the dancefloor. The accompanying The Vow, meanwhile, is in some ways quite similar in terms of MO – there's another long, beatless intro, more floaty vox and, again, plenty of heft in the bottom end – but this time there's also a slight but discernible reggae/dub slant.

Two fine cuts that should suit liquid lovers down to the ground, with The Vow just nudging it for yours truly.
