German house and techno duo APNOEA come to Ralf Kollman's label

Berlin’s Mobilee Records have put out a consistently relevant and credible stream of releases over the past 16 years. For release #238, we find them unearthing yet another hotly-tipped gem, this one coming from APNOEA, who we're told came to the label's attention after remixing Timo Maas.

As solo artists the pair have already gained enough recognition to secure sets at Berghain and Cocoon, while as a duo, they bring 40 years of studio experience. So it’s no surprise that Why We Breathe threw me straight back to those halcyon days of Circo Loco, when a terrace was actually a terrace! The production is tight and the track’s led by a powerful but not overbearing oscillating synth, which provides the moody backdrop to melodic, squelchy overtones with a pitch-shifted vocal delivering a narrative worthy of the canvas it adorns. I can see this becoming a big track at some parties, or a slice of mood to be built upon at others.

Moving on to Moodivation and there’s no vocal this time, leaving the synths and melodies to convey feeling. Come Closer’s remix pushes the melodic elements into sharper focus, resulting in an cleaner, louder-sounding version, but it’s the original that I gravitate towards: it’s delicate and understated and the pair’s years in the studio show out with their use of dynamic range across the track.

This EP should resonate with those whose taste buds are more electronically charged, and I can also see the lead track appealing to the more open-minded jocks among us. If you like your house and techno with depth and feeling, there’s a fair chance you’ll like some or all of this EP, too.
