Italy's Alessandro Mugnaini delivers the goods in style
Hector Couto's Roush Label seem to be consistently delivering the good stuff into my inbox of late. Like its predecessors, this latest release is a trove of aural delights, in the form of three tracks that seriously rock my world.
First up is the title track For You, which starts with a breakbeat intro, then builds via the addition of a kickdrum, an electro bassline and well-timed vocal samples to create a groove of epic proportions. It's definitely a "less is more" kinda thing, but thanks to sci-fi FX, risers and some clever vocal sampling you have all you'll need to totally rock many a dancefloor the world over. The second track, Na Na Down, starts with a different breakbeat which is quickly joined by another simple but effective bassline and more vocal samples. There's a breakdown with an almighty riser and a hoover sound, which usher in the rapped vocals. These are quiet in the mix and lend a great rhythmic timbre to the track, which also has a series of mini-breakdowns that really add tension. Last but not least comes In This Life, which starts with a kick and skippy percussion that are soon joined by a super deep bassline, which sounds great at high volumes and is a real speaker-shaker. We eventually come to a breakdown with vocal samples, and then on it goes, weaving its merry dance around your synapses.
This EP really is ‘all killer no filler,’ and for that reason I don't have a favourite track - I'll be giving all three a severe thrashing over the coming months.
