Akademik comes to fellow Colombian Juan Rodriguez's NoStandardMusic label
NoStandardMusic was founded by Berlin- and Ibiza-based DJ/producer Juan Rodriguez, who set up the label to release and promote the music of producers based in his hometown Medellin in Colombia and beyond, which is a great back story to two great tracks.
No More Junk starts with a cymbal crash and a funky loop, and grows with the introduction of an even funkier bassline, muted vocal samples and hand claps, which together make for an interesting track that makes you want to get up and dance. The second track, Tonka, begins with a muted kick and snare and builds with a funky bassline, crisp percussion and echoed sounds to a breakdown which brings in other progressive elements, and onwards it goes with a real ‘less is more’ vibe. There is another muted vocal sample but not much else, which isn't a problem as it has got me grooving already.
There's nothing better than finding a track you know is really good but isn't being hammered by every other DJ out there, and this is one of those situations as it's not out till 16 January. When it's released that will change though, as this is one seriously good release.
