Swiss producer Who gets busy with the sampler, with pleasing results
"A no-frills house banger," is how the hype sheet describes this debut release from new Paris-based label Get Your Copy Records.
The single-track release is, like the label itself, the work of Who, a Swiss DJ and producer who's been active since the early 00s, holding down residencies for HYTE and Zoo Project in Ibiza, and playing clubs and festivals all across western Europe. And now he introduces his own imprint with a track that lifts chunks of the vocal from Yazoo's early 80s synthpop/proto-house classic Don't Go and places them atop a backing consisting of a sinuous, sleazy bassline, and frenzied 909-sounding drums and synth-strings that hark back to the early days in Chicago.
With an urgent, slightly menacing air, it's a track that wouldn't have sounded out of place at the Music Box, yet will be equally at home (and equally effective) on today's floors. A no-frills house banger indeed!
