'What's Going On?' is out now on FFRR and is already getting heavy rotation on Radio 1

Out now on FFRR, Denney & Mekon's latest single What's Going On? is picking up heavy airplay on Radio 1, thanks not least to the choice of guest vocalist - none other than original hip-hop mic queen Roxanne Shanté.

For those too young to remember, Roxanne Shanté was one of the first female MCs to rise to fame, starting in the early 80s when, aged just 14, she recorded Roxanne's Revenge with Mr Magic and Tyrone Williams. The track was an answer to UTFO's track Roxanne Roxanne, with Shanté (real name Lolita Shanté Gooden) adopting the role of 'Roxanne', and the track spawned several dozen (!) answer tracks - a bizarre little interlude in hip-hop history, the full story of which you can read on Wikipedia.

Shanté herself quickly moved on from the controversy and would go on to release two full-length albums, 1989's Bad Sister and 1992's The Bitch Is Back. She left the music industry in her mid-20s, but in recent years has returned to performing and recording. A film about her life, Roxanne Roxanne, premiered at the last Sundance Film Festival and will hit cinemas later this year.

In the meantime, there's this excellent hand-drawn, retro-flavoured video for What's Going On? to watch. Now have a nice day...
