Tape emulates three different models of reel-to-reel tape recorder
New from Softube comes Tape, a plug-in that does what it says on the (entirely non-existent) tin, modelling three different reel-to-reel tape machines to bring some of that elusive "tape warmth" to your digital productions.
Softube's being a little cagey about precisely what three machines those, are though. The press release simply states that, "TYPE A is based on a classic Swiss high-end reel-to-reel design, generally known and admired for its precision and linearity; TYPE B is a much more colourful affair - a transformer-based machine that adds weight and creaminess to the low end; and TYPE C is based on a British tape machine with a visible vintage vibe."
Operating the plug-in can, Softube says, be as simple as selecting a machine type, then adjusting the Amount knob. But if you want to get a little more hands-on, then you can also adjust the Tape Speed, Speed Stability and the amount of channel Crosstalk. In addition to this, there's a Wet/Dry knob and a High Freq Trim filter. The plug-in will work in any DAW that uses AAX, AU or VST plug-ins, but Presonus Studio One users are especially well catered for, with the inclusion of a MixFX plug-in called Tape Multitrack that expands the feature set.
Tape is available now at the introductory price of $79 (£61 approx), rising to $99 (£76 approx) after 30 June; there's also a free 20-day trial version available. For more information, see Softube's own website.
