The self-released EP lands in stores today, complete with an electro-house remix from Sweden's Jon Born
Today's exclusive track premiere takes us into UK garage territory, as iDJ brings you a first chance to hear the Blakk Habit Mix of Psyrena's Rainbows & Unicorns. It's the title track from her new EP which is out today, complete with Original and Jon Born mixes.
A former TV producer for the Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, Psyrena is also a singer and multi-instrumentalist whose previous musical credits include co-writing the music for 2016 film Bliss!. Her original version of Rainbows & Unicorns is in an arty electro-pop vein – file it alongside the likes of Lady Gaga or La Roux – and the song itself, she says, is "my way to cope with the current quarantine… I escaped the drab outside world and found an entire universe full of colour right here in my head & heart."
But arty electro-pop isn't really what iDJ's about. Bumpin' 2-step garage, on the other hand, is EXACTLY what we're all about! So step up Leeds native Blakk Habit – real name Matt Moore – who says of his rerub: "I’ve been producing garage for a lot of years and I’m fortunate to be involved in a lot of remix projects. When I heard the original for Rainbows & Unicorns I could feel the energy and intensity of the track. The vocal performance was great too. This remix was a lot of fun to do! When approaching my remix, I wanted to encapsulate that energy and bring a classic 2-step flavour to it."
In that task, we'd say he's been more than successful. But as ever, you don't have to take our word for it… see what you think!
