Thomas Gandey suppies the vocal for this acid-tinged tech-houser
Both Toolroom and Toolroom Trax have made some great signings this year. The latest from the latter imprint is another large one, as French techno hero Olivier Giacomotto teams up with the UK's Thomas Gandey (AKA Cagedbaby) for his Toolroom debut What About Acid.
First up is the Original Mix, a builder which starts with the bassline, a shaker and a dampened snare, with the "what about acid?" vocal line from Gandey increasing in volume and a synth sound and the bassline getting more twisted as the acidic undertones are cranked up. There's also a second vocal line that I can't decipher, which is sung as the lead line in a higher tone.
Then you have the Supernova Remix, an altogether groovier affair with a swung percussive backbeat and congas, which again builds in intensity and uses the two same vocal hooks, but this time cut-up and interspersed throughout in a way that's very pleasing to the ear. For me, this is the better of the two mixes as it's that much funkier, and there's a great breakdown, too, with a breakbeat drum pattern and a 303 slowly cranking up the acidity, joined by a snare roll for the drop as the track kicks back in.
With radio edits of both mixes also included and the originals the perfect length at just over seven minutes apiece, this is a winning release.
