'Carefree (I Am A Star)' is out today, a new version of 'The Whistle Song' follows next week
It's Frankie Knuckles Day on Tuesday (25 August), and this year will see the occasion marked by the release of two posthumous singles from the house originator.
Out today on DJ International, previously unreleased archive cut Carefree (I Am A Star) is the first single to trail Jackmaster 7 – a new DJ International comp in the tradition of their legendary Jackmaster albums from the late 80s and early 90s. The track features the late Knuckles on vocals as well as behind the board, and comes with a brace of remixes from fellow Chi-Town legend Chip-E and DJ International boss Rocky Jones.
That's followed by a new version of The Whistle Song – the Eric Kupper Sound Factory Re-rub – which drops on SoSure Music on Tuesday. The track has been completely reproduced by Knuckles' long-term production partner Eric Kupper, and is said to be a faithful recreation of the original cassette demo that he gave Knuckles to debut at New York's Sound Factory many years ago.
"Still untitled, it became instantly popular," recalls Kupper. "People came up to the booth asking, what's that whistle song you've been playing? So it was named by people on the dancefloor at Sound Factory!"
A percentage of profits from The Whistle Song will go to the Frankie Knuckles Foundation.
